All you need to know... Slavery: The history and legacy of one of the world's most brutal institutions by James Walvin.

Nowadays slavery is condemned almost everywhere as an abomination. For centuries, however, it was freedom, not slavery, which was the unusual condition in most parts of the world. And while today slavery is most commonly associated with the movement of millions of African slaves across the Atlantic to America and the Caribbean, in truth the institution of slavery is as old as civilisation itself and one, moreover, which until about 200 years ago was backed by the world's  major religions. Yet within two or three lifetimes organised slavery all but disappeared with Britain, once a leading exponent, becoming the foremost champion of liberation. Why? And how did slavery become such an accepted part of life in the first place? In this concise but vivid account, James Walvin tells the story of one of the world's most brutal institutions.
