Fabulosa! The story of Polari, Britain's secret gay language by Paul Baker.
In the first half of the twentieth century, Polari offered its speakers a degree of public camouflage and a means of identification. Paul Baker describes Polari's origins, its linguistic nuts and bolts, and the ways and environments in which it was spoken. He traces the reasons for its decline and tells of its unlikely re-emergence in the twenty-first century. From sailors to drag queens, Round the Horne's Julian and Sandy to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Fabulosa! offers a fascinating and tender account of this funny, filthy and ingenious language.
