DescriptionThe painter Walter Sickert was a man of contradictions: a radical reactionary, a reclusive socialite, a traditionalist who never stopped innovating, a philanderer who believed in the sanctity of marriage, and a determined internationalist who - eventually - found his home at the heart of the British school. In this outstanding biography Matthew Sturgis provides the first fully documented account of Sickert's long and colourful life, drawing on previously untapped sources to capture the spirit of a man whose career spanned the twilight of the Victorian era to the beginning of the Second World War, and whose influence remains visible in the work of artists as varied as Frank Auerbach and Tracey Emin. The book also conclusively puts paid to any idea that Sickert was 'Jack the Ripper'.
