Description

The archaeology of Merseyside is extremely rich and varied. Humans have been modifying the landscape for over 10,000 years. The river and coast have always been significant to Merseyside. From early village settlements to industrial and port activity in its towns, connected communities have used the natural resources of Merseyside, making this place their home. Teams of archaeologists have been investigating this history since the nineteenth century.

Twenty sites have been selected to explore the stories of Merseyside’s past from mesolithic to modern, reflecting on lifestyles, settlements, communities, beliefs, and food. The Archaeology of Merseyside in 20 Digs explores the archaeology of the region through the lens of these excavations.

Elizabeth J. Stewart is the Lead Curator of Archaeology and the Historic Environment at the Museum of Liverpool. She is an archaeologist with a research background in buildings archaeology, who has undertaken fieldwork and research on sites covering many periods. Elizabeth curates the regional archaeology collection, using objects to explore the stories of the region's past. She is author of ‘Courts and Alleys: A History of Liverpool Courtyard Housing’.

Vanessa Oakden is the Curator of Regional and Community Archaeology at the Museum of Liverpool with a background in fieldwork, small finds and community archaeology. Vanessa curates the regional archaeology collection and develops community archaeology projects. She is the author of ‘50 Finds from Cheshire’ and ‘50 Finds from Manchester and Merseyside’.
