Description

A reproduction of Meadowland by Elizabeth Christie Austen Brown (1869-1942), Walker Art Gallery collection.

Little is known of Brown's life and career. She studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, where she learned the colour woodcut technique. She and her husband Thomas Austen Brown (1859-1924) divided their time between London and artists' colonies in France and London. He was also a print maker, and her works are sometimes mistaken for his. Brown's prints use simplified forms to depict the countryside. The colours capture subtle light effects from the French landscape. Printed before 1908. Purchased by the Walker Art Gallery from the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition in 1908.
