Description

Many books have been written about the life of William Lever who later became the first Lord Leverhulme. This extensively illustrated history looks not only at the grocery business which grew from humble beginnings in Bolton to become the global giant Unilever, but it also tells the story of his mother and father, of his brother James, who was the other brother in Lever Brothers, and it recounts the lives of their eight sisters.

It examines in more detail many of the other areas in which William was involved; in his home town of Bolton; on Wirral where he established the factory and village of Port Sunlight; in Thornton Hough where he and many of his family lived; in London where his magnificent home still stands alongside Hampstead Heath; and in the Outer Hebrides, where his attempts to re-organise the islanders met with very limited success... together with some of his less well-known ventures which still impact on the landscape today.
