Description

The Walker Art Gallery opened to the public in 1877. Since then, it has become famous for its outstanding collection and world-class quality and variety.

The history of the Gallery and its collection reflects Liverpool's deep commitment to and appreciation of the arts. It also reflects the city's wealth and significance in the late 19th century and beyond, derived from its involvement in transatlantic slavery, the associated trade, and the growth of the British Empire.

This richly illustrated guide introduces the Walker, its history and collections. Early Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite, Impressionist, modern and contemporary art are all featured, covering the 13th century to the present day.

Featuring works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin, Gainsborough, Stubbs, Turner, Millais, Rossetti, Cezanne, Degas, Monet, Matisse, Hepworth, Hockney and Himid, this book is the perfect introduction to the Walker.
