Description

Blue and White by Louise Jopling (1843-1933) from the Lady Lever Art Gallery collection.

Louise Jopling, born in Manchester, studied art under the painter Charles Chaplin. A versatile artist, she was one of the leading female artists in Victorian England and a good friend of John Everett Millais, one of Lever’s favourite artists. She exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon.

This picture from 1896 is typical of the works Lever purchased to advertise soap. He knew that pretty young women in their bright, white frocks would appeal to his customers.

This enduring image of cleanliness will be familiar to many people who saw it proudly framed in Hyacinth Bucket’s home in the sitcom Keeping Up Appearances. Lever renamed it Home Bright, Hearts Light and had a carton of Sunlight Soap added to the table for his advertisements
