The Lady Lever Art Gallery's collection of British embroideries made between about 1600 and 1800 is of exceptional importance and its pictorial embroideries can scarcely be rivalled by any other collection. This very detailed catalogue by Xanthe Brooke is particularly notable for its pioneering investigation into the sources and purpose of their rich iconography. 200 black and white illustrations and 24 colour plates.
