Description

This richly illustrated guide introduces the Lady Lever, its history and its collections. Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite paintings, sculpture, ceramics, fine furniture, rich tapestries, antiquities and Masonic items are all featured, as well as examples from the finest collection of Wedgwood jasperware in the world.

The Lady Lever Art Gallery owes its existence to the vision of one man – William Hesketh Lever, later Lord Leverhulme. Lever purpose built the Gallery in memory of his late wife, with the intention of using it to display his extensive art collection. Since opening to the public in 1922, the Gallery has become particularly famous for its world-class collections of British art, but is also known for its Chinese porcelain and ethnographic collections. The Gallery’s continued popularity stands testament to Lever’s assertion that art “…is within the reach of all of us”.
