The Wedding Morning by John Henry Frederick Bacon (1866-1913) from the Lady Lever Art Gallery collection.

Bacon was born in Kennington. He trained at the Westminster School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. At 18 he set off on a professional tour of India and Burma. Returning to England in 1889, he exhibited at the Royal Academy. A successful painter of religious works, portraiture and genre works, he was an Associate of the Royal Academy and was awarded the Member of the Royal Victorian Order for distinguished service to the King.

In this painting from 1892, the subject and the way the light comes from the back of the picture, leaving many of the figures in shadow, identifies this as a Newlyn School painting. In his diary Lever described this painting as “only a moderate picture but very suitable for a soap advertisement”. For the adverts bars of Sunlight Soap were substituted for the clock on the mantelpiece and the cup and saucer on the table. The emphasis on new and expensive clothing in a modest interior would encourage the purchase of soap even among the relatively poor.
